CATHOLIC KNIGHTS OF ST. MULUMBA PETITION CENSOR'S BOARD ON 'A VERY DIRTY CHRISTMAS'

The Director-General,

National Film and Video Censors' Board (NFVCB) Plot 20, Alexandria Crescent

Attention: Dr. Shaibu Husseini

Dear Sir,

The Order of the Knights of Saint Mulumba Nigeria (KSM a body of lay faithful within the Catholic Church, steadfastly committed to the Church's doctrines and to the defence of its moral and spiritual heritage is compelled to formally bring to your attention a film of grave concern titled A Very Dirty Christmas, executive-produced by Ms. Int Edo and directed by Mr. Akay Mason.

The film, released to Nigerian cinemas on 16 December 2025, features a prominent cast including Lateef Adedimeji, Nancy Isim#, Eucharia Anunobi, IK Ogbonna, and Wumi Toriola. It is marketed with the tagline: “77iis Christriias, the only thing getting unwrapped are secrets,  and revolves around a chaotic family reunion where so-called “secrets” are unveiled.

Released in the heart of the holy Advent season, A Very Dirty Christmas constitutes, in both substance and symbolism, a gratuitous desecration of Christmas. The timing and framing of the film are not merely insensitive; they amount to a mocking trivialisation of one of the most sacred moments in the Christian calendar the celebration of the birth of Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, on 25 December, around which the entire yuletide season revolves. To turn this solemn season into a caricature, laden with vulgar insinuations and irreverent undertones, is to venture into the realm of blasphemy.

It is therefore deeply troubling that a film so clearly disposed to offend the religious sensibilities of a significant portion of the Nigerian population was approved for public exhibition by your esteemed regulatory body. Since its release, the film has continued to provoke widespread indignation, inflame passions, and stoke avoidable tension. Left unchecked, it carries the real potential to undermine religious harmony and public peace.

In light of the foregoing, we respectfully but firmly urge the National Film and Video Censor's Board to act with urgency by ordering the immediate withdrawal of A Very Dirty Christmas from all cinemas and exhibition platforms. Furthennoie, we call for appi opriate Sanctions against the producers and promoter‘s of the films, as well as disciplinary ineasiiies for those responsible for vetting and appi‘oving its release, in order to deter futui'e infractions of this nature and to forestall any i'ecurrence.

We tnist in your high sense of professionalism, responsibility, and patriotism to ensure that this clear affront to religious sensibilities and the broader thleat it poses to peaceful coexistence is swiftly and decisively addressed.

Yours faithfully,

For: KSM Nigeria

Sir Steve Adehi, SAN, CKSx, xcss

Supreme Knight.
